THe Process & Stats

A Read It & Leave It volunteer works in conjunction with a community center, after-school program, or school.

We read and (leave) donate the book to the students. Giving students the opporunity to build home libraries

For accountability purposes, administrators as well as students will track the books received through the program.

General Stats 💯

Involvement and Language Development

  • By the age of 2, children from wealthier families hear 30 million more words than children from less affluent families, contributing to a significant gap in language development. (Hart & Risley, 1995)

  • Parental involvement in reading activities is associated with children having higher levels of language and literacy skills. (National Early Literacy Panel)

Access to Books and Academic Achievement

  • A child from a low-income family has an average of one book for every 300 children, while a child from a middle-income family has an average of 13 books per child. (Neuman & Celano, 2001)

  • Children with access to 25 books or more at home complete more years of education than children who have fewer books. (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development)

Multicultural Literature and Cultural Identity

  • Exposure to multicultural literature contributes to positive racial attitudes and greater cultural awareness among children. (Scales & Richards, 2015)

  • Reading books that reflect one's cultural identity can enhance a child's sense of self-worth and pride. (Bishop, 1990)

Catherine Snow 1998

“Academic success, as defined by high school graduation, can be predicted with reasonable accuracy by knowing someone’s reading skill at the end of third grade. A person who is not at least a modestly skilled reader by that time is unlikely to graduate from high school.”

61% of low-income families have no books at home, 37% of children arrive at kindergarten unprepared for learning and 50% of low-income children start first grade up to two years behind (National Center for Education Statistics)
